I heard in the news today that an earthquake hit Central Visayas Region in the Philippines, February 6, 2012. The highest magnitude recorded was 7. A tsunami alert No. 2 is lifted in the Visayas coasts.
Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology or Phivolcs Director Renato Solidum Jr. told the media that it is not the under water volcanoes that caused the earthquake. It is the subduction which means the the process of the oceanic lithosphere colliding with and descending beneath the continental lithosphere.
This is very scary especially to those who reside along the coasts. Although my family lives far from the sea, the ground shaking is frightening. I am praying for the safety of everyone. And to all the travelers in the region, please be alert and exercise extra caution.
