Word of the Day: Biometrics

Biometrics is the science and technology of measuring and analyzing biological data. In information technology, biometrics refers to technologies that measure and analyze human body characteristics, such as fingerprints, eye retinas and irises, voice patterns, facial patterns and hand measurements, for authentication purposes.

Biometric devices, such as fingerscanners, consist of:

  • A reader or scanning device
  • Software that converts the scanned information into digital form and compares match points
  • A database that stores the biometric data for comparison

This is becoming increasingly common in corporate and public security systems to prevent identity theft. Read more…

Done in Fifteen Minutes

I thought it will take me hours to capture my Biometrics in La Gran Plaza in Fort Worth. The Biometrics is one of the requirements for individuals who are applying for a visa or adjusting for status like me. My appointment was two o’clock in the afternoon. I arrived 30 minutes earlier but there are applicants who are earlier than me waiting in line. Five minutes before the scheduled time, a lady staff went out and put the sign ‘2:00 PM’ appointment. She told us to fall in line and get our appointment letters, IDs, and passports ready. Earrings should be taken off and mobile phones are prohibited.
The Biometrics procedures are well-implemented and the staff is courteous. It just took me fifteen minutes and I had it all done.
